(Toronto) The Polaris Long List was announced today. What does this mean? Well, for the artists announced on the long list, it means more record sales. On July 7th this long list will be widdled down to 10 finalist with the eventual winner of the Polaris Prize, and $20 000, being announced on September 21st. Some Panic Manual favourites made the long list, such as Woodpigeon, La patère rose, Joel Plaskett and Hey Rosetta!

I do find it odd that Polaris even announces the long list. It is pretty much a money grab for those involved. For me, I see it as a chance to see what good Canadian albums I have missed this past year, and a chance to validate my MP3 collection. Why isn’t the Polaris team asking me to contribute to their selections? Maybe next year.

With this long list being announced, the Friday, June 19th show at the Dakota Tavern for NXNE just got that much more interesting. Be sure to check out Polaris Long List nominees Coeur de Pirate at 8:00 and One Hundred Dollars at 9:00.

Patrick Watson is from Montreal.

You’re right, though, he probably won’t win again. It’ll probably be Jill Barber or something ridiculous like that.

If Jill Barber wins I’ll very disappointed. I’ve never found her all that interesting and the little I heard of Chances didn’t do much to change my mind.

You know who ought to win? K’NAAN, because Troubadour is joyous and heartbreaking and just fucking awesome. It literally made me cry at parts. It would also be a welcome chance for Polaris to put their “all genres welcome” money where their mouth is.
