Last night saw the return of the popular sketch In The Year 2000 on the Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, but now it is more appropriately named In The Year 3000.
The sketch first appeared in the late 90’s with Conan’s co-host Andy Richter and himself making funny predictions for the year 2000. When Andy Richter left Late Night, Conan continued to perform the sketch with his guests. The second to last prediction typically found Conan making fun of his guest, and the last prediction saw the guest sticking it back to Conan. Although the sketch was performed well into the 2000’s, Conan kept it named In The Year 2000 just because. This is the fist sketch to be carried over from Late Night to The Tonight Show.
Last nights show also had Julia Louis Dreyfus as a guest. Man, that woman gets better looking as she gets older.

I can’t stay up past 11 on weeknights anymore. The sound of TV is like a fist-sized barbiturate to me past 10:00 PM.
However I have nothing but the fondest memories of Conan from back in the day when he’d taken over Letterman’s old time slot. My favourite bit they did was when Conan found out he was in a 2:35 AM time slot in Austin and proceeded to go to the Austin bus station to ask dangerous vagrants why they weren’t at home watching his show. Conan interviewed a guy named “Bubba” who had no idea who he was but finally jogged the guy’s memory and the guy exclaimed “OH YEAH…the one with the little fat dude!”
Andy comes out after the bit is done and yells I AM NOT FAT!
Then there was that brilliant push for a Dirty Dancing re-release where he continuously played clips with Jerry Orbach.
I just hope Robert Smigel (genius behind Triumph the Comic Insult Dog) is still there.
I’m a huge Letterman fan, but I think he is in trouble.
The first two years of Letterman on CBS were good and still had smatterings of quirkiness (Dick Ass Man, Mujibar and Sirajul, Rupert of the Hello Deli). Then they just stopped trying. Rupert almost got stabbed in Times Square. Letterman ass-kissed a lot and had a heart attack. He grew a beard, but unlike most beards it failed to sexify him. Now he just seems sad.
Conan on the otherhand has given me some of the greatest laughs of my life, pre-drugs. The first Westminster Abbey dog show Triumph went to, the Bon Jovi concert, his interviews with Martha Stewart, the (sorry) Houston bus shelter incident – http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1880685_1880687_1880746,00.html and the guy’s name was BUFFALO! Damn my old age.
Then there was Mr. T, the Finnish President campaigning because of their similarly pasty, moon-faced appearances..
