Toronto – Sometime last year, I would say between January and December, Fatboy Slim/Norman Cook decided to collaborate with some friends and make some sweet summer music. The result was a group called The B.P.A (Brighton Port Authority) and the same was called ‘Toe Jam‘, which also produced one of the better music videos seen in the past half decade. Why Norman Cook/Fatboy Slim decided to do this under a new moniker, only God knows. Anyways, the single generated great hype all across the English sea board and was a success for all involved (completing Dizzee Rascal’s summer of greatness). A second single followed, this time featuring Emmy the Great, who I know nothing about aside from the fact that she is very cute and is probably half asian.

A proper full length album “We’re going to need a bigger boat” was released on Feb 3 off Southern Fried record, as with most albums featuring djs/collaborators, it features a handful of guest stars – Ashley Beedle, Martha Wainwright, Jamie T and Iggy Pop among others. Definitely an interesting group of guest stars. I guess the title of the album is from the Jaws movie, but originally I thought it was something racist and had to do with fobs and maybe a social comment on how much asian immigrants there are these days. However, that is clearly not the case. Why would it be? I don’t even know.
Onto the album itself – I have to say, I was not overwhelmed by the album. I thought it was going to be a pure summer party album based on the horns/ska tinged playfulness of the song Toe Jam, but a lot of the songs are definitely more mellow then I had imagined it would be. There are definitely some tunes you can play at your social mixer (Toe Jam, Should I Stay or Should I Blow, He’s Frank) but there are also some tunes that could be on the Garden State 2 soundtrack. Also, the track Island sounds a lot like Groove Armada’s At The River. Maybe not, but that is what I thought of when I heard that song. I a thought that some of the guest singers could have been better chosen as a couple of them seem to blend in to each other. Where’s Antony when you need him?
All in all, I think this would have been served better as an EP, as there are definitely some fillers on the album. I also think the Twelves remix of He’s Frank is better then the original.

That song you posted with Emmy The Great is fantastic. Best on the album by a long shot.
