*Windom Earle performing at 6015 Willow

6015 Willow is an address in Halifax. Over the years the house has provided shelter and acted as a hub for many artists and musicians in the city. As 6015 residents Paul Hammond and Jeffrey Parkers time in the house came to an end they wanted to do something big, so the guys decided to have 20 local bands perform over 3 days and film it. The result of their project is a movie that shows one performance by each band with short clips of behind the scenes footage. So pretty much if you buy the DVD, you get 20 songs by bands from Halifax.

I would have liked to have seen more of the behind the scenes and how they put the project together, but I think the decision to make the movie a performance DVD instead of a “how we did it” documentary was a bold conscious choice.

Stand out performances by The Stolen Minks, The Got To Get Got, The Just Barelys, Tomcat Combat, The Maynards, The Superfantastics and Windom Earle. A majority of the remaining performances fall into a category of music not discussed much here on the Panic Manual. I’m not sure what genre they fall into but it usually consist of four guys, dressed in black, sweating and playing the shit out of their instruments, while the guy in front screams into the microphone. Is it garage rock? It isn’t heavy metal. It’s mostly just loud and it is not a style of music that I listen to much, but is apparently pretty popular in coastal cities like Halifax. I hit the FF button a few times to get to the above-mentioned bands. Yah, needless to say, I was really into The Maynards cooking show, and not so much the VKNGS performance (yes, another vowel-less band)

Also, watch out for the OV Gramme interlude. A great change up in the visuals.

If you are a fan of at least one of the bands featured in 6015 Willow, then it is an essential DVD to have. I will be covering some of these bands more in-depth in the coming weeks and as they show up at CMW and NXNE here in Toronto (hopefully)

6015 Willow is a Pineapple Pear Films and Willow Street Production. Directed by Mark Mullane, Produced by Paul Hammond and Jeffrey Parker.
