Toronto – “I am doing very well” says Morrissey as he welcomes you to his ninth album. A song by Morrissey about Morrissey, shocking! Moz’s album ‘Years of Refusal‘ is due out February 16th, just in time for the people who are lonely on Valentines day to go pick up the Pope of Mope’s cd and listen to it in their rooms all alone while reading Edgar Allan Poe poetry and lighting up scented candles. I was quite disappointed with ‘Ringleaders of the Tormentors’ and so I am listening to a sneak preview of this album with some trepidation. So what’s this album like? It is like the other MOrrissey’s album – the lyrics dominate. On “I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris”, Moz declares that he is ‘throwing my arms around Paris’ because ‘because only stone and steel accept my love’. When I first heard this song I wondered if I was about Paris Hilton, haha. But it is apparantly referring to the Eiffel Tower. Morrissey once again writes about himself in the song ‘All you need is me’, telling people (probably detractors) that ‘There’s so much destruction / All over the world And all you can do is / Complain about me ” Typical stuff from him I guess

With a classical guitar and a Spanish influenced sound, “When Last I Spoke to Carol” is the standout track for me on this album, it is the only track that sounds significantly different from the others and the little flamenco guitar sound is a welcome change, as most of the other songs rely on the heavier guitar sound that has been prevalent in the past few albums. The song “That’s How People Grow Up” is another solid song, but maybe this is because I have already heard this song many times, since its a few years old. “One Day Goodbye Will Be Farewell” has a nice marching drum beat and uses horns, which is pleasant.

Overall, after listenin to it once or twice, I would say this album is decent, it doesn’t really have the energy that “You are My Quarry” had, but it wasn’t as bad as “Ringleader of the Tormentors”. Chances are, if you are a Morrissey fan, you are going to check this out regardless, and if you are not, then you are wondering why I am reviewing an album of a 49 year old guy holding a baby.
