Toronto - That’s right bitches, you knew it was coming sooner or later. I have decided to dedicate an entire article series to my favorite band - Suede. Haters be gone (looking at Josh). So a little bit about Suede - They were a britpop band that was formed in the late eighties and was popular in the early nineties. They were widely credited with putting a bite back in British music after a decade of rather sad, somewhat wussy music from the likes of The Smiths, The Cure, Beautiful South, etc.

Suede was one of the first super hyped NME bands, which could be a good or bad thing.Lead singer Brett Anderson became quite controversial when he (with rather androgynous looks) told the magazine “I am a bisexual man without any homosexual experience”. They also openly wrote songs about drugs (Animal Nitrate), and had several videos banned from television because of the images in it. PR stunts aside, Suede produced great music. Grandiose in every sense of the word, the first three Suede albums (Suede, Dog Man Star, Sci Fi Lullabies Disc 1) were full of great tunes.

Alright, on to the tunes. The first tune from Suedeview is “My Dark Star”. Elegant piano notes starts off this song about the Indian girlfriend of Brett Anderson at time. This song first appeared as a b-side on the Stay Together EP, and is also on the b-side compilation “Sci Fi lullabies” . It is a favorite among Suede fans and features the typical strong Butler guitar work and that ‘after the party low’ vibe that Suede does so well.

“She will come from India, with the love in her eyes - Ohhhhhhh how my dark star will rise” …

(featuring the infamous Brett Anderson “OOOhhhhhhh”)

Give it a listen.

Ps. I wonder if Dark Star was reference to her skin color, or her mentality…
