Red Bull Soap Box Race 2008

Vancouver, On very rare occasions I step out of my house to brave swarms of coffee drinking yuppies and smelly hippies in order to attend events here in Vancouver. This past weekends Red Bull Soap Box race was an event I’ve been looking forward to attending for a little while now, not so much to take in the festival-like atmosphere, more so to see some bad ass crashes.
We arrived at the location (Kitsilano) around an hour before the actual races started in order to check out some of this year’s 45 entries and there were some great ones, along with some genuinely funny 30 second skits when they were introduced. There were a couple of spills, mostly due to breaking too hard and flipping over. There was a team called ‘Tacos For Life’ that lost a wheel right at the start line and proceeded to carry their giant taco down the hill. They only made it half way.
Some of the celebrities in attendance - Cabbie from The Score, dressed up in racer garb and interviewing the drivers after they completed the race. I like that dude. Sam and Dean Winchester from ‘Supernatural’, an annoying Much Music VJ and some chick from Shaw TV.
All in all a pretty fun time if you were lucky to get a good spot close to the track. I have a feeling next year is gonna be packed.
Here are some of my faves:
1) Pac-Man - Not only was the car shaped like Pac-Man, he had 2 ghosts hitched to his rear and his mouth actually opened and closed.

2) The Ambiguously Gay Duo - Inspired by the animated SNL sketch, these guys went all out with their costumes and erm…hot rod.

3) Batman - This was my wife’s favorite. Old school style with awesome costumes and a skit that would make Adam West proud. Batman was accompanied by Robin, The Penguin and Joker.

4) Golden Shower - Fan favorite and the winner of this years event. Unfortunately their theme wasn’t as literal as some would have hoped. The driver was dressed up like Daniel Larusso at the Halloween dance in The Karate Kid, but painted gold.

5) White Snake - The car shaped like flying “V” guitar with some 80’s rock costumes. This car actually flipped over when it tried to stop after the finish line. I cheered.
