Toronto – I can’t resist a good pop album. I just can’t, there’s something about the sweet saccharine that is a proper pop music that makes your day go a little better. The carefree lyrics, the simple hooks and the soft beats – all are designed to put a smile on your face, and in the case of Don’t Stop, the second album from Annie, the album definitely puts a big smile on your face.
For those of you who don’t know Annie, she is a Norwegian pop artist that put out a critically acclaimed album ‘Anniemal’ four years ago. I quite liked the album, especially the song ‘Heartbeat’. The album was pretty much a pop album, but it was a well done pop album, with catchy tunes all over the place. October will see the release of Don’t Stop, her second album.
It’s not easy to review a pop album, since all pop songs contain the same elements – catchy chorus, the odd ballad, the dance song, simple to cheesy lyrics and a general light fluff feel to it. What I can tell you is that this album is quite good, everything in the album is done rather well. Featuring guest spots from Alex Kapanos (of Franz Ferdinand), Datarock and Girls Aloud, the album is full of potential singles (Heaven and Hell, I Can’t Let Go) that will get ignored here in North America, which is sad.
All in all, an excellent pop album to end off the summer.
4/5
Here is a song called Heaven and Hell, its so damn poppy it could bring peace to the middle east.
