Although I wouldn't consider TDK genre defining. The characters and the overall story of Batman is a lot darker than the usual superhero fare. I think what really made this movie is that Nolan pulled the atmosphere and emotion straight from the comic series which translated to more dark and flawed characters. Most other superhero movies focus on the main protagonist who usually suffer through the usual quirks. Yeah dude, amazing movie.
