You may remember American actress Zooey Deschanel as the older sister with attitude in Almost Famous. Since then she has been in lots of movies that I haven’t seen and released a CD under the name She & Him. Later this year you can see her starring opposite Jim Carrey in Yes Men. The ‘him’ part of She & Him is M. Ward who plays guitar and makes the occasional vocal appearance on their first release, Volume One.

She And Him dwell somewhere in the 1960’s era of female pop classics. It isn’t anywhere nearly as sexually aggressive and suggestive as the Pipettes, but has a bit more body than the latest Camera Obscura. I think I even hear a slide guitar, giving it a country western feel in some of the later songs on the record.

The first release, Why Do You Let Me Stay Here, is an obvious stand out track. I like it. Have a listen to Sweet Darlin’ below. It’s pretty cute. She & Him has been a pleasant surprise since I stumbled upon it last month.

I heard one of the tracks on UBC’s CITR 101.9 a few days ago. Forgot the name of the track but it sounded great.

the 4 tracks on their MySpace page are solid. I had a hard time deciding what to throw up here. Sweet Darlin’ is like the 12th track on the cd.
