Movie Review: Drumline

Toronto - I caught the last 25 minutes of this movie, but I pretty much know what happens. Basically, kid comes from some rough ghetto to lend his drumming skills to some school so that they can win some drumming competition. I think there was like, one white person in the movie, and he wanted to be black. Everyone else is black, so you know who the audience for this movie is. one of the black dudes in the movie is played by the dude in heroes who can walk thru walls. I don’t really know what his role in the movie is, other then to give approving nods to the kid from harlem, who i guess has won over all the kids in his school and learn some lessons. the ‘coach/father head figure’ of the team is played by orlando jones, who speaks like a white person.
anyways, after some controversy that i probably missed, the end game of the movie is some big drumming competition, where the good guys school goes against the bad ass rich preppy school. they import some big name rap guy to rap during their set, and he comes out in a big white fur coat, so you know he’s hit it big. anyways, theres some smug looking black guy on the preppy school that keeps on looking at orlando jones making weird hand gestures that i guess would indicate he’s confident. the bad preppy school guys are wearing PURPLE, which to me, destroys any credibility they may have had as an enemy. can you imagine, you are about to go to war, you run on the field, and your enemy is wearing purple, with gold tassles? i’d die laughing. then they’d stab me, but i’d be laughing anyway.
so after some decent drumming stuff, its decided to be a tie, and they have DRUM OFF. OMFG, i never knew this stuff could happen. the crowd is going nuts, as someone who’s never been in this kind of environment, this shit blows my mind and im wondering if stuff like this happens, or is it just in movies. the fans are going nuts, its like a rap video. anyways, the drum off is pretty cool i guess, everyones trying to act all hardcore and stuff. then the movie ends right there. i mean, what of these kids? do they become rappers? basketball players? go to college? go to jail? start up a barber shop? there is no resolution for any of this, which is what you get when you make a movie where none of the characters are well rounded or do anything of significance.
