The "chick" from the bar is Little Marie who is a girl from his neighborhood from the original Rocky movie. He walks her home and protects her from making bad decision... to show that the Rocky character is caring. And as far as the message is concerned, I'm not sure what you were watching, but the message is clearly stated. True perserverance is measured when you keep moving no matter how hard life hits you.
