Part 2 is more of the rock stuff, with some dancey kinda music put in. This compilation might have less variety in it, as its more straightforward, and less bands from Sweden, but more bands from England.

2006 Compilation Part 2 - NIte

1. Baxendale - I Built This City (Original Maxi Mix) (5:22)

Thanks to a wonderful site called Blisspop, I get 10-15 good tracks every month. Baxendale was one of the tracks that I have got, and it is a great track. I’m pretty sure the falsetto makes the song, but its just a great song with good lyrics.

2. The Gossip - Standing In The Way of Control (4:16)

A trio from Portland, Oregon, The Gossip draws a lot of comparisions to Le Tigre. Basically, both bands are chick bands who yell and play good rock. The song “Standing in the Way of Control” was written by Beth as a response to her government’s decision to deny gays the right to marriage in the United States (according to wikipedia). Whatever it may be about, its a good tune to get ya going.

3. The Automatic - Monster (3:41)

Whats that coming over the hill? Is it a monster? ITS A MONSTER!!! and that…is the chorus line for the summer of 2006 in England. Signed to the same label that Kaiser Chiefs are on, there are some similarities with the two bands. Mainly, The Automatic put out a pretty solid indie-rock album that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

4. The Upper Room - All Over This Town (3:29)

Apparantly this band broke up already. Despite having their debut album released in May. I guess you won’t see them touring anytime soon!

5. The Fratellis - Everybody Knows You Cried Last Night (3:54)

Although the Fratellis’s other song (Costello Dagger) is a big hit, I like this song just as much. All three members of this band have the same last name, but they aren’t related. What are the odds ? They have already recieved the weekly NME tag of ‘Britains Best New Band’ and yeah, they sound a little bit like the Libertines.

6. The Ordinary Boys - Boys Will Be Boys (2:42)

Hmm where to begin…first of all, the lead singer (Preston something) is a big UK celebrity now, since he went on the UK’s version of celebrity Big Brother and caused a lot of ruckus. Apparantly people over there actually watch Big Brother. Anyways, that guy is probably better known as the dude from Big Brother then as the lead of the Ordinary Boys. Their first album sounded like the Jam, the second one has a lot ska -like songs in it..and its pretty damn good.

7. The Sunshine Underground - Commercial Breakdown (3:50)

Strangely enough, the Ordinary Boys also have a song on their album called ‘Commerical Breakdown’ but this one is better. From Leeds, this Dance/Funk/Rock band has found moderate chart success with their take on what indie-dance/rock music should sound like.

8. Hot Chip - Over And Over (5:47)

A band that calls themselves the “bedroom neptunes”, Hot Chip is an electro-pop band that has found a lot of success this year with their second release. This is a catchy little dance tune, Id say.

9. TV on the Radio - Wolf Like Me (5:08)

A New York / Brooklyn act that opened for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs a few years ago, they have since gone on to do their own thing and came out with a pretty well recieved album in 2006. They are one of David Bowie’s favorite bands apparantly. I don’t really think that means anything though, either way, this is a good rock song.

10. Milburn - Lipstick Licking (2:33)

A UK band who sounds eerily similar to Arctic Monkeys. I guess if the formula works, then why not?

11. Dirty Pretty Things - Bang Bang You’re Dead (3:33)

Carl Barat’s new band made its debut with this single, obviously referencing crack addict Pete Doherty, who use to be in the Libertines with Carl Barat. Neither person’s new band (Babyshambles and Dirty Pretty Things) have even come close to the success of the Libs, and if either one of the those two had any business instinct at all, they would reform the Libertines, tour and make a lot of money. Obviously, they are probably both two screwed up to do that.

12. Little Man Tate - House Party At Boothy’s (4:12)

If the Fratellis were Arctic Monkeys VII, and Milburn was Arctic Monkeys VIII, then Little Man Tate would be Arctic Monkeys IV. I really like the single cover though. Its weird, because Pulp is from Sheffield and you’d think bands would be influenced by them growing up..but nope.

13. The Strokes - Heart In A Cage (3:27)

The band that started this whole ‘garage rock’ thing, quietly released a new cd in 2006. The Strokes released Heart In A Cage, a surprisingly good cd. Of course, the band didn’t really care. They did put on a very good show at the Virgin Festival on the Island, and it was the first time I seen a band member finish a bottle of wine on stage.

14. The Rapture - Whoo! Alright-Yeah…Uh Huh (3:48)

Along with many people, I was surprised at how solid The Rapture’s second outing was. Count me down as someone who thought they might be one trick ponies. Luckily, the guy with the annoying voice cut back on the sitting and they kept up with that whole dance-funk thing they do well. Personally, I think this song is better then their breakout hit (House of Jealous Lovers).

15. Infadels - Jagger ’67 (3:26)

An Electronic-Rock band from ..err..England, the Infadels released their debut album this year after touring with the likes of the Prodigy and Faithless. This song was partially ruined for me when one evening, at around 3:30 am, my roommate and his buddies decided they needed to play this song at about 10,000 decibels. It has been a while since that happened, and I have since recovered although I will probably never forget that moment.

16. Klaxons - atlantis to interzone (crystal castles remix) (4:09)

Its NEEEEEEEEEEW RAAAVVVVEEE. As NME dubbed it. Klaxons are part of the new dancey-electronic-rock scene that has gotten a lot of hype lately (along with bands like Shitdisco). This remix of the song (Crystal Castles is another electronic-rock band) sounds nothing like the original. I really like the music in this one. Probably the song I listened to the most in October. I also got this song from the site Blisspop.

17. The Cribs - You’re Gonna Lose Us (2:37)

Featuring my favorite chorus line of 2006: “When I’m drunk I can be an Asshole, that don’t mean I got no class no”, the Cribs might be familiar to you because Martell Minitures (a song on my 2005 compilation) was frequently featured in the Telus commerical with a bird in it. I bet they made some good coin from it.

18. Bed is Rude - Albertian Soccer Star (2:18)

Anytime you have a song written about you, you have got to put it into your year end compilation. I believe that is a law somewhere. Unless you are George W, then you probably dont want all the songs written about you in the compilation. Anyway, Bed Is Rude is a band based out of Toronto, Canada. They were impressed enough by my soccer talents that they decided to write a song about it. Always leaves a smile on my face..and jealousy on others. Muhaha.

19. Boy Kill Boy - Ivy Parker

This English band kinda sounds like a Killers rip off, until you realize the Killers probably sound like a rip off of some 80s band. Then it doesn’t really matter. This song is not a single, and its bit of a downer, but the compilation is winding down. I am not fond of the band name, as the initials are BKB, and if you switch the K to a S, you get BSB, which is the backstreet boys. So technically, they are one letter away from being a boy band from Orlando.

20. Bodies Of Water - Love Will Call You by Name (3:49)

The last song of the compilation comes from the Los Angeles quartet Bodies of Water, I guess they have been described as a 60s influenced folkish kind of band. They could almost sound like a Swedish band on depressants, with their whole male and female vocals and stuff. Anyways, thats the compilation.
